Description

Batch OT-006 (July 2022):

Tulsi “Kapoor”, aka Holy Basil, aka Temperate Tulsi (Ocimum spp.) is a North American hybrid of Tulsi.  Holy Basil has been revered in Ayurvedic traditions for thousands of years. Kapoor was bred to grow prolifically as an annual and self-seed in N. American climates. This batch was bio-dynamically farmed at Pangaea Plants, a Demeter and Organic certified herb farm near Lake Lure, NC.

The aroma of this oil is quite lovely; just like the Holy Basil that many North Americans have become familiar with. Notes of Clove with an earthy Basil base and subtly sweet bubble-gum top notes. Since the yield is so low, this essential oil is super concentrated. So, the more this oil is diluted, the more notable the sweet/top notes (which makes it great for perfume blends). Tulsi oil made from true/original Indian subcontinent cultivars (most common Tulsi oil on the market) have a stronger clove aroma.

Tulsi essential oil is said to be an adaptogen (helping the body adapt to stresses and other environmental pressures), disinfectant, calming, purifying, deoderizing and bug-repelling. Those with sensitive skin could have a mild reaction to the Eugenol (Clove aroma) so should consider diluting it to 1% as recommended by Tisserand and Young in Essential Oil Safety. It is also recommended that pregnant or nursing mothers, children, those with epilepsy, or people with blood-clotting disorders avoid use of this oil.¹

A caution about consumptionTulsi tea is very common and delicious. Tea made from the Kapoor variety is found throughout the U.S. and is perfectly safe to drink. However, we recommend against the use of our Tulsi oil to make tea. The main reasons:

  • Essential oil does not dissolve in hot (or cold) water. So a drop in tea will float on the surface and interact with your mouth, sinuses, throat and digestive system as if it is undiluted.
  • One drop would be like putting 2.5-4 bags of tea in one cup. Even if you could dilute one drop in water, this oil is so concentrated, one drop is made from 34 grams of fresh flowers and leaves; more than 10x the amount of leaves in an average tea bag (2.5-4x if you account for the tea bag being dried leaves as opposed to fresh herbs).
