Using Pure Essential Oils

Tips for Using Pure Essential Oils

Essential Oils are highly concentrated so a little goes a long way. If you are new to using essential oils, you may wonder HOW to use them. This short article covers a few simple ways to safely enjoy the Aromatherapy benefits of your essential oils.

Diffuse: Drop 4-8 drops of essential oil into your favorite essential oil diffuser (adjust per manufacturer’s instructions). If you do not have a diffuser, you can put several drops in a pot of water on your wood stove or over low heat on your stovetop.

*It is important to remember that our indoor pets have much more sensitive noses than we do so please keep that in mind. Fewer drops at a time will still fill the room, but with less potency

Disinfecting Room or Surface Spray: Add 10-20 drops to an empty 12oz spray bottle and fill with water. Shake well and mist the air. For a more powerful surface cleaner, you can add more essential oil and an ounce or two of neutral spirits, rubbing alcohol or distilled vinegar. Shake frequently when using either spray.

*Use care around light cloth surfaces as some darker essential oils could stain fabric

In the Shower: This is our favorite! Apply several drops to a hard shower/tub surface where the oil will not immediately be washed away. As you shower, the steam will pick up the essential oil and create an aromatically immersive experience.

*Hint: Conifers help sooth respiratory tightness and congestion while citrus and Ginger are invigorating!

*Applying the essential oil to a vertical surface like the shower wall or curtain works best, but some softer plastics can warp from the solvent power of essential oil

*We don’t advise adding essential oils directly to bath water; most float on water and adhere to the skin undiluted, which can cause sensitive skin irritation

In Your Laundry: If you haven’t heard of wool dryer balls, check them out! They save energy and eliminate the need for dryer sheets by: absorbing static electricity, physically fluffing wrinkles out and you can apply several drops of your preferred essential oil to make your clean clothes smell pretty, fresh and natural!

Dilute: This is a wide subject that we will just touch on here. For topical use, we generally recommend diluting pure essential oils down to 5% or less of the final solution. For example: a simple, potent and soothing 5% chest rub can be made by mixing 1.5 ml (30 drops) of Eastern Hemlock essential oil into 1 oz of coconut oil (or your preferred “carrier oil”).
